
Journaling is powerful—but what if you just can’t write?
Ten years ago, I was a solo mom of two, doing a post-doc, living abroad, and drowning in stress with a capital S. My mind was constantly racing and whirling, but I couldn’t get my thoughts onto paper no matter how hard I tried.
And it wasn’t because I wasn’t writing.
In fact, I spent entire days in front of a screen—reading, researching, writing academic papers, and churning out presentations. My brain was always “on.” But when it came to writing for me, to process my emotions, to make sense of all this chaos rumbling inside me… I just couldn’t.
Yet, I needed an outlet.
So, I created my own method: Verounaling™—yep, that's what I called it from day uno.
What Is Verounaling™?
It’s simple: verbal journaling.

No filters. No editing. No judgment. Just streaming your thoughts out loud the way you would in a journal, except using your voice instead of a pen.
This practice became my lifeline through one of the hardest periods of my life. It helped me process deep emotions, track my personal growth, and release mental clutter—without ever putting a pen to paper.

1) Find a quiet space. (Or don’t—some of my best recordings were made during omukai, while walking to pick up my kids from Gakudo, or while prepping/cooking meals at night after the kiddos had slept.)
2) Open your voice memo app. (Any voice recording app. We now have apps like Otter.ai if you want transcriptions. Me? Simple = Easier)
3) Press record and start talking.
4) Let it flow. No need to be deep or structured—just say what’s on your mind. Cry, sigh or crack yourself up with laughter. It's your show!
5) Listen back if you want—or don’t. Sometimes, just the act of speaking is enough.
